Umami: Savouring Artistic Nikkei Identity, Part 2

Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre, Burnaby, BC - To Sep 27

by Michael Turner

The Nikkei presents the second part of its exhibition honouring artists of Japanese ancestry, taking its title from the recent discovery of a “fifth taste” (along with sweet, sour, salty and bitter). Umami, which translates as a “pleasant savoury taste,” is a characteristic of cooked meats and broths—and a complement to other flavours. An apt metaphor for the richness and depth of Nikkei art. Included are works by artists Brian Kobayakawa & Anne Sumi, Molly JF Caldwell, Yoshiko Hirano, Marlene Howell, Vivian Nishi and Reiko Pleau.
