Julie Himel: Awe Struck
Foster/White Gallery, Seattle, WA - Dec 4-20
Since when are straightforward landscapes charged with urgent, political symbolism? In her new work, Julie Himel joins other Northwest landscape painters such as Michael Brophy in turning otherwise benign forest scenes into settings of chaos, industrial decay and apocalyptic aftermath. Himel was educated at York University and the Toronto School of Art. Her new works marshal her aggressive brushwork into churning sites of flooding, timber clear-cutting and the imminent cataclysm of a simple sunset. fosterwhite.com
