Ingeborg Gerdes: Out West

Blue Sky Gallery, Portland, OR - Aug 5 – 29

by Joseph Gallivan

German-educated economist Ingeborg Gerdes was trained at the San Francisco Art Institute, going from a casual cross-country tourist to a keen-eyed documentary photographer. She loved crowd scenes, blue-collar environments and, because of her weak left eye, wide-angle shots. Photographing the rural West became her long-term project from 1982. This show comes from Carmel, California, where she taught photography for two decades at UC Santa Cruz. Gerdes died in 2020, at age 81.
