Ellen George: The Heart Catches the Hand

Nine Gallery (inside Blue Sky), Portland, OR - Jun 5 – 28

by Joseph Gallivan

Ellen George’s minimalist sculptures have always reflected her upbringing by the ocean, where the vast horizons and microscopic creatures fascinated her, especially their contrasting size. “The scale shift motility, clustering, and translucency of these animals and plants inform my work to this day,” she told Preview. George is showing 26 paper-thin wood panels, which she has marked with silverpoint, casein, ink and pyrography (burning). A tai chi practitioner, she is concerned with expansion, circularity and balance, and shapes, gestures, lines and placement are the result.
