HONOURS: BRITISH COLUMBIA – Audain Prize for the Visual Arts

by Michael Turner

Born in Fort St. John, BC, in 1970 to a Dane-zaa mother and a Swiss-Canadian father, 2025 recipient Brian Jungen first distinguished himself with Prototypes for New Understanding, a 1999 exhibition partly consisting of Northwest Coast–style masks made from reshaped Nike Air Jordans. Since then, Jungen has participated in exhibitions the world over. He continues to reshape new and second-hand retail objects, often into animal forms threatened by the mass production of his source materials. MT
