HONORS: WASHINGTON – Seattle Art Museum’s Betty Bowen Award
Situated at the intersection of art, medicine and the environment, the detailed, fantastical watercolours of 2025 honouree Ann Leda Shapiro derive from her training in acupuncture and her pioneering participation in feminist and countercultural movements. Though her 1973 solo show at the Whitney Museum of Modern Art heralded her as an important influence, she was censored for her exploration of gender- and sexuality-based issues. Her work will be featured in a solo exhibition at SAM in 2027. MT
