Cave and Basin Mural Project: Stories of This Place - Meet the Artists

For the second year, the Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation and Cave and Basin National Historic Site have partnered to honour the rich Indigenous history and contemporary significance of this special and sacred space through the temporary mural project. The 2022 mural boxes will be re-installed, be sure to visit the site to see the new 2023 additions! The mural artwork will be up for all of summer 2023.

Indigenous connections to the hot springs, Banff, and the mountains are visible to all site visitors in the form of colorful murals created by emerging Indigenous artists. The guiding theme for the project continues to be “Stories of this Place.” Selected artists in 2023 are Brandon Atkinson (Métis), Lillian Rose (Ktuanxa) and Tania Willard (Secwépemc).

This project will continue to be guided by Dawn Saunders Dahl, Angus Leech with Parks Canada, and Mural Artist AJA Louden, mentoring the artists about art techniques, research, and public art. The completed murals will be an opportunity for all visitors to the Cave and Basin to learn about the diverse Indigenous stories, histories and experiences that live in this special place. The goal of embedding a mentorship opportunity within this art project is to provide positive experiences through the transfer of knowledge, thus strengthening Indigenous artistic voices within the public art and art exhibition fields.

Artists in Action:
Mural artists will be on-site at the Cave and Basin National Historic Site between June 17th and July 5th to create their murals.

Meet the Artists:
On June 26 - 28 between 12 - 1 p.m., head over to the Cave and Basin to meet Metis mural artist, Brandon Atkinson and Akisq’nuk (Ktunaxa) mural artist, Lillian Rose.
On July 3 - 5 between 12 - 1 p.m., head over to the Cave and Basin to meet Secwépemc artist Tania Willard.
