Early Days: Indigenous Art from the Mcmichael
This publication celebrates the contemporary and historical Indigenous holdings of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, located in Kleinburg, Ontario. Ambitious in scale and lavishly illustrated, the book is edited by Anishinaabe artist and scholar Bonnie Devine, with contributions from over 70 “cultural stakeholders.” Their critical essays and personal reflections enlarge our understanding of more than two centuries of Indigenous creative production, from the Arctic to the Northwest Coast to the Eastern Woodlands and beyond. The art imaged here honours long-standing connections to land and ancestors while also addressing present-day issues of repatriation, reconciliation and resilience. Published by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and Figure.1.
