Return to Paueru Gai: Fifty Years of Vancouver’s Powell Street Festival
Paueru Gai is the name of a Downtown Eastside Vancouver neighbour-hood located on either side of a five-block stretch of Powell Street, a place of early settlement and forced removal of Japanese Canadians during the shameful years of World War II internment. In 1977, the Powell Street Festival was formed by community members to celebrate Japanese Canadian history, art and culture. This full-colour book, edited by Emiko Morita, gathers essays and photographs that chronicle the range and energies of these summertime celebrations.
