Ian Stone: A Seat at the Table

Montreal-based Ian Stone’s high-realist oil-on-linen works draw on the signs and symbols of genre painting to explore queer memory, camp and the aesthetics of collecting. Using acquired and received materials, Stone positions painting as a platform for archival imagining, where objects take the place of histories shaped by desire, longing and exclusion. Like many contemporary painters, Stone’s work is informed by art history, both as a reference guide and as a critical enterprise.
