“We Were All Living A Dream”: Reflections on Twentieth-Century Lesbian Feminism through the Photography of Donna Pollach

by Joseph Gallivan

From the early 1970s, for 30 years, artist Donna Pollach photographed the feminist and lesbian women of Portland in both public displays and quiet domestic moments. Her work “captured intimate moments among women as they worked together to deconstruct and redefine conventional ideas and expectations of womanhood, family, motherhood, and relationships,” according to the OHS. Fellow activist Ellen Goldberg noted Pollach’s “blend of gritty-real people doing almost surreal groundbreaking that reflected our lesbian community in that moment of history.” ohs.org/museum
