The Wandering Womb: Isabelle Albuquerque and Louise Bourgeois
lumber room, Portland, OR - To Jan 31, 2026
In the 19th century, many Western doctors still thought that hysteria was caused by the womb moving around, and it was grounds for incarceration or a hysterectomy. LA-based artist Isabelle Albuquerque often casts her own body parts in bronze, resin, wood and wax. This show includes her large steel piece Mother and Child, from her Alien Spring series. Her work seeks to “claim the body as a site of collective liberation and evolutionary possibility.” Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010) is known for her oeuvre that explored themes of family, memory, childhood trauma and sexuality. Here’s a rare chance to see her sculptures Torso, Self-Portrait (1963–64), Pregnant Woman (2002) and Depression Woman (1949–50). lumberroom.com
