Massive Change: The Future of Global Design is an immense collaboration commissioned by the Vancouver Art Gallery about the future of design on a global scale. Posing the question, Now that we can do anything, what will we do? it showcases work by Toronto's Bruce Mau Design (BMD) and its related educational initiative, Institute without Boundaries (ItB). BMD has collaborated with some of the world's leading architects, artists, writers, curators, businesses and institutions to design projects ranging from books and identity branding to product development and exhibitions.

Massive Change explores numerous facets of global design. It is divided into key areas of human activity including information management, energy, military equipment and politics. Installations employ sound and video, photography, computer and satellite images, interactive technologies and three-dimensional constructs.

Among the innovations represented are self-healing plastic and artificially grown body parts. The show examines new transportation devices, developments in speed and safety, computer interfaces, the interplay of design for entertainment and the military and nanotech military suits that heal wounds. Innovative technologies include digital tailoring, (a 12-second 200,000 data-point capture of the body's exact measurements) and human gene therapy procedures.

In conjunction with this exhibition the Vancouver Art Gallery presents eminent author and advisor to corporations and heads of state, Alvin Toffler, at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel, 7pm, Oct 15. Also, Massive Change: Visionaries, five conversations exploring radical experiments in sustainable energy, technology, revolutionary materials, urban development, information systems and living organisms hosted by Emmy award-winning journalist Charlie Rose, 10am-5:30pm, Oct 16 at the Vogue Theatre.
