The Whatcom Museum occupies three distinctive and historically significant buildings in downtown Bellingham’s Arts District. The Lightcatcher building features rotating traveling art exhibitions, a permanent Northwest Coast exhibit, the Family Interactive Gallery, and the Museum Store. The Museum’s 1892 Old City Hall building features maritime and logging history exhibits, as well as the John M. Edson Hall of Birds. The Syre Education Center contains the Photo Archives.
Opening Feb 11 Katazome Today: Migrations of a Japanese Art. Seven national and international artists share fresh perspectives on the traditional Japanese art form, katazome, with current interpretations. They present a range of pictorial imagery, and non-traditional expressions such as large-scale installations and free-form painting techniques, relating katazome to themes of personal identity and shifting cultures.
