RICHARD MOSSE: THE ENCLAVE Portland Art Museum, Portland Nov 8-Feb 15  Richard Mosse’s powerful video installation The Enclave was produced using discontinued military film technology designed in World War II to reveal camouflage hidden within the landscape. With this infrared-based film, which registers greens in a spectrum of intense pinks, reds and purples, Mosse documented the violent conflicts and widespread humanitarian disasters ongoing in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This first U.S. museum presentation of The Enclave is a haunting non-linear narrative revealing a forgotten tragedy against a sublimely beautiful backdrop.

AKIHIKO MIYOSHI: PIGMENT MIGRATIONS AND SUSPENDED REFRACTIONS Upfor Gallery, Portland Nov 6-29 In his photographic and light-based installation work, Akihiko Miyoshi’s abstract images reflect his technological interests. Trained as a computer engineer, Miyoshi borrows aesthetics from the digital realm to create colourfully layered compositions through physical manipulation rather than digital enhancements. His large-format images are often conceived using mirrors, tape, paper and other optical effects. Miyoshi's canny imagery insinuates parallels between warm analog methods and digital practices, while suggesting the dichotomy between the two media.

SAMANTHA WALL: LET YOUR EYES ADJUST TO THE DARK Laura Russo Gallery, Portland Dec 4-24 Samantha Wall creates riveting drawings from her exchanges with other multiracial women. Wall, who was born in Seoul, South Korea, interviews and photographs her subjects, always searching for that moment between expression and release. Wall amplifies these nuances of emotion in compelling charcoal, graphite and ink drawings, often silhouetting the figures in subtle gradations. The results are contemplative artworks that consider human subjectivity in light of complex cultural expectations.

CHRISTOPHER BURKETT Northwest by Northwest Gallery, Cannon Beach Nov 25-Jan 15 Christopher Burkett expresses the wonderment of the natural world through the immaculate medium of colour photography. He captures large-format imagery on 8” x 10” transparencies, revealing crisp details and rich luminous colours in his traditionally printed photographs. Burkett is nationally recognized for his darkroom mastery and is one of the few photographic artists to continue conventional printing rather than digital processing where imagery manipulation is made easy.

SHIRLEY GITTELSOHN: L’CHAIM – TO LIFE! Oregon Jewish Museum, Portland Oct 30-Jan 4 Shirley Gittelsohn, who grew up in Portland and attended Reed College, has been painting for over 50 years. Her expressive works are characterized by broad, relaxed brushwork, vibrant fields of colour and warm subject matter. During her career, Gittelsohn has depicted landscapes, cityscapes and figurative works, as well as creating her signature flowers and still-life paintings. This exhibit includes her iconic florals, lush images of Mexico, and lovingly rendered family portraits in a richly hued Impressionistic style.
