ROGER SHIMOMURA: AN AMERICAN KNOCKOFF Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Salem, Jan 17-Mar 29 Painter, printmaker and performance artist Roger Shimomura has been exhibiting for over four decades, on themes that address the dichotomy between his American culture and his Japanese descent. In his socio-political narratives, Shimomura blends Pop Art and comic book imagery with the traditions of Japanese woodblock printing. This large survey includes early works recalling his childhood time in an internment camp during World War II, as well as newer pieces where the artist depicts himself battling stereotypes in witty satire.

JEREMY ROTSZTAIN: ELECTRIC FIELDS Upfor Gallery, Portland, Feb 5-28 In this new collection of animations, Jeremy Rotsztain imagines how Colour Field painters may have embraced the medium of virtual reality. Rotsztain uses software programming to write algorithms that describe painterly gestures within a virtual 3-D space. Floating arrangements of morphing shapes and harmonious colours present an atmospheric account of a seemingly infinite dream world. This innovative artist works at a unique cusp of digital media practice informed by painting attributes to create these ethereal compositions.

JOE MACCA Laura Russo Gallery, Portland, Feb 5-28 Oregon artist Joe Macca is known for his nuanced abstractions that reference colorations from the natural world. With soft gradient fields of seamless colour, Macca’s minimal compositions offer quiet testimonies to the subtle power of chromatic choices. In his most recent series, Nostalgia, the formal investigations turn to an increasingly monochromatic palette of rich sepias and greys that gently lean toward warm greens, violets and deep charcoal. These stark compositions exude light inside the misty emptiness of immaculate surfaces.

REBECCA NORRIS WEBB: MY DAKOTA Blue Sky Gallery, Portland, Feb 5-Mar 1 In 2005, Rebecca Norris Webb began photographing her vast home state of South Dakota. A year into the project, her brother unexpectedly died and, as a way of processing her grief, she continued the work in earnest. This exhibit combines luminous colour prints of the South Dakota landscape with the artist’s poetry, pencilled onto the gallery walls. The sentiment in this series is a personal reflection that echoes a journey of loss set in its own geography.

MASTERWORKS | PORTLAND: EL GRECO Portland Art Museum, Portland, Dec 13-Apr 5 The rarely loaned Renaissance-era treasure on show here is considered El Greco’s greatest devotional painting. Holy Family with Saint Mary Magdalen is the latest installment of the PAM’s Masterworks series and a fine example of the Spanish artist’s mature style. Painted in the 1590s, this dramatic painting depicts an otherworldly scene of the Holy Family. El Greco stylized the figures and the setting into elongated forms that float among voluminous folds of fabric below a turbulent sky.
