Landon Mackenzie: Parallel Journey:
Works on Paper (1975-2015)

Kelowna Art Gallery
Kelowna BC – Oct 24, 2015-Jan 17, 2016

Any assessment of the current state of painting in Vancouver must include the work of Landon Mackenzie. Since she arrived to take a teaching position at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design (now University) in 1986, Mackenzie’s large-scale, celestial canvases have shown up in homes, galleries and museums as regular as rain. Less seen are her equally expressive works on paper, a parallel pursuit that dates back to her undergraduate years at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD), where she studied printmaking.

Of the works on display (some of which include etchings from Mackenzie’s first NSCAD classes and others that she made during her recent travels), many contain text, a practice associated with the early stages of her paintings, where words and phrases she writes onto the canvas become buried as the painting reaches completion.

Whether Mackenzie’s texts are there to guide the composition or as secret messages put in place for good luck (or both) remains to be seen. Most apparent, though, is the artist’s knack for colour, line and form, and her exuberance for life, which reaches higher than the sky.
