Abbas Akhavan’s Study for a Monument (begun in 2013) is an ongoing project concerned as much with the nature of ceremonial remembrance as it is with the material composition of its elements. Working from photographic documentation, Akhavan has sculpted flowers and plants native to the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, cast them in human-scale bronze forms and displayed them horizontally on white cotton sheets.

It is no coincidence that Akhavan’s forms should resemble dead bodies, like those seen on news reports. Yet, unlike today’s bodies, these floral forms suggest an earlier genesis, predating recent conflicts in Iraq and the colonial interventions of the 19th century – instead reaching back to, say, 600 BC, when the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were considered one of the Ancient Wonders of the World.

While Akhavan has demonstrated a long-standing interest in site-specificity, immediate architectures, and global economies and the lives they shape, his recent work has focused on the domestic sphere – what he refers to as that “forked space between hospitality and hostility.” In viewing his ongoing monument, we are reminded that flowers and plants, though decorative symbols of humankind’s accomplishments, are ranked according to their taxonomic families.
