Chloë Lum & Yannick Desranleau:
5 Tableaux (It Bounces Back)

Or Gallery
Vancouver BC – Sep 10-Oct 29, 2016

Though known for their dynamic silkscreened paper environments, it was in 2015 that the Montreal-based duo began to invite dancers and musicians into their work. Prior to that, the artists relied on the material itself – its fragility, its ability to suggest associative gestures and sounds – to convey life’s scuffs and crushes, where, as they state on their website, “objects perform via their decay.”

But why the shift? Why add to that which nuance so gracefully portrays? One reason might be found in another of the artists’ interests: collaboration.

Until recently, Lum and Desranleau made work under the moniker Seripop, whose poster art, according to Vice magazine, “became the visual anchor and ambassador for Montreal’s – if not Canada’s – underground.” The two were also active in AIDS Wolf, a band they put to rest in 2013. Is this new configuration an attempt to integrate into a single installation what once operated under multiple umbrellas?

An answer might be found in exhibition curator Joni Low’s introduction, “Drawing from the history of tableaux vivants as a form of protest and appropriation, they add motion and sound, proposing non-hierarchal situations where distinctions between artistic mediums, and between humans and non-humans, begin to dissolve.”
