Sixty artists have been selected this year by the Blackberry Art Gallery to exhibit their original concepts for apparel and accessories in five categories: Recycled Material, sponsored by Pacific Coast Terminals; childrens wearable art, sponsored by BC Hydro; Brassieres Fantastique, sponsored by Spike Pub; headdresses, sponsored by Coast Capital Savings; and an Open Category.
Almost 80 artworks from artists in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and China will be shown.
The pieces range from the elegant and fantastic to the outrageous. Working with materials like newspapers, recycled fabrics, ribbons, feathers, lace, glass, photographs, plastics, found objects, metal clips and pins, this years lineup features a two-piece dress covered with 27 pounds of unsolicited Christmas flyers; an autobiographical timeline dress created from the artists personal photographs; and a shiny metal wedding dress. The unique assortment of attire includes bathing suits, hats and headdresses, robes, dresses, vests, masks, coats, purses and wraps.
The Wearable Art Awards will be presented September 23 in the Port Moody City Hall Galleria. Tickets are available at the Port Moody Arts Centre, 2425 St. Johns Street, Port Moody or phone 604-931-2008.
