Joel Mara grew up on the beaches of Campbell River where he loved to spend time watching the rhythm of nature unfold around him. This love of the landscape resonates in his iconic, highly textured oil paintings of West Coast mountains and beaches, and in Maras obvious love of the craft: the colours, the brushstrokes, and the impeccable attention to detail.
Joel Mara studied graphic design and illustration at Capilano College and earned a diploma in 2004. He went on to study oil painting and acrylic techniques with Susan Falk and Robert Genn, respectively. Since then, his landscape paintings have been exhibited in New York, Vancouver, Seattle, and Calgary.
Mara stills spends time in nature, exploring and photographing remote locations, as well as plein air painting experiences that bring a spectacularly vivid realism to his paintings. When I begin to draw a horizon line on a blank canvas I am transported, he writes. To me it seems I am creating a window to a place
like re-assembling the memory of a place Ive been to before
I want other people to see and experience with me through my paintings. My aim is to create a feeling of being there.
