It is often forgotten in this era of iconic architecture and mercurial curators that the measure of a civic art museum is not what is in your face, but what is in its vaults. I am speaking, of course, of the permanent collection, where the history of art – and what the institution relishes as art – lies waiting.

Now in its 42nd year, the KAG has blossomed into a dynamic collecting institution that features a range of exhibitions, community presentations and educational programs in service of what is, according to a 2015 Statistics Canada survey, the fifth-fastest-growing municipality in the country. Since its first accessioned work in 1977 (After the Rain by local painter Irvine Adams), the KAG has acquired 814 objects through donation and purchase.

For this exhibition, and perhaps in light of Kelowna’s accelerating growth, KAG curator Liz Wylie has focused on scale – specifically, that “hallmark aspect of Modernist painting in the post-World War II era” known for its “increasing size, sometimes referred to as heroic.” Among the 15 paintings on display (some local, all Canadian), highlights include David Alexander’s Contrasting Day Drawing (2008), Rose Braun’s Departures (2009), Vicky Marshall’s Apple Tree (1987) and Gary Pearson’s The Toast (2000-02).
