Originally commissioned by dowager Queen Catherine de’ Medici in 1564, the Tuileries Garden in Paris was later transformed by landscape architect André Le Nôtre into a formal garden for Louis XIV, the Sun King. It 1667, it became one of the first public parks in Europe, transitioning from a place for entertaining nobility only. This 63-acre Parisian landmark, which stretches from the Louvre to Place de la Concorde, has inspired generations of artists. And, with its many monumental sculptures dotting the beautiful grounds, it has also acted as an outdoor museum.

This major travelling exhibit brings together more than 100 Tuileries-inspired works created by acclaimed European and American artists from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Several of the large-scale pieces from the garden itself have never before left France.

The iconic, elegant outdoor setting has influenced painters such as Édouard Manet, Camille Pissarro and Childe Hassam, as well as photographers such as Eugène Atget, Henri Cartier-Bresson and André Kertész and sculptors such as François-Joseph Bosio, Antoine Coysevox and Aristide Maillol. Paintings, drawings, sculpture and photography show depictions of the grounds in both historical documentations and expressive artistic renderings. The art, design and evolution of the impressive manicured park – filled with sculptured hedgerows, fountains and mazes – are accentuated in this comprehensive collection, whose pieces span from classic to contemporary.
