Action-Camera: Beijing Performance Photography examines performance art in mainland China and in particular, Beijing. Curator Keith Wallace traces the historical roots of Chinese performance art as it emerged in the early 1990s, the effects of documentation on subsequent work, and the state of performance art today. Within 20 years, Chinese performance art evolved from an underground activity centred in Beijing’s “East Village” to a unique and internationally recognized art form in 2009.

The early photographs had a powerful effect on succeeding artists, who subsequently viewed photography as an integral component of their live performance work. For many artists, by the late 1990s, the photograph functioned not only as a document but also as the work of art. The performance by Li Wei, for example, was intended not as a living spectacle but as a photograph based on a staging of the artist, suspended by invisible cables, shown as if flying out a window.

The exhibition catalogue, edited by Keith Wallace and published by the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, accompanies the exhibition. It includes colour images, a bibliography, and essays by Dr. Thomas J. Berghuis of the Department of Art History and Film Studies at the University of Sydney, Beijing-based writer and curator Maya Kóvskaya, and curator and writer Keith Wallace. The exhibit is presented by Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad, The Canada Council for the Arts, and the Vancouver Foundation.
